EAL Support Overview

We are very proud of our experienced EAL department in school and the support we provide to ensure that students whose first language is not English are able to access the curriculum and achieve in line with all students.

In a given year, we generally have less than 5% of the student population whose English proficiency level is A, B or C in years 7-11. An example of the average cohorts below: -

· A (New to English, 3 students)

· B (Early Acquisition, 6 students)

· C (Developing Competence, 27 students)

We have a systematic process for admission and induction of EAL students. EAL staff attend admission interviews for students who use English as an additional language and their English language proficiency levels are assessed within three weeks of arrival. EAL support is arranged based on the needs of the students.

Proficiency levels are assessed using Flash Academy and teacher assessments. These assessments which include details of current levels of listening, reading, speaking, and writing along with support strategies are shared with staff on Teams. Students have individual accounts on Flash Academy and those at proficiency levels A and B complete regular assignments. Students are provided with iPads to use in lessons for translation and images. Students who are not literate in their first language receive basic literacy support.

Students in Y7-9 at Proficiency Level A or B receive 1:1 or small group support during at least four of their English lessons per fortnight. Students in Year 10-11 at Proficiency Level A, B, C are taking one less GCSE option and receive 5 periods of support during that option time.

Students are supported to develop their English language skills but can receive support with work in any subject. Students at proficiency levels A, B and C also receive some in class support e.g. Y11 students are currently receiving support in class to complete GCSE assignments in Art, Food and Geography.
