Our aim is: To enable students to develop a love for the sciences and to understand the world around them through Chemistry. By learning about scientific enquiries, students are able to answer scientific questions about the world around them and to make a positive contribution to society which enhances their Science Capital


Chemistry underpins our everyday existence.  From the moment you are born and throughout your life,you are surrounded by Chemistry- the air you breathe, the food you eat and the clothes you wear. Whether studying the chemistry of life, or developing the advanced science behind modern technology, chemical scientists use their expertise to improve our health, our environment and our daily lives.

Chemistry itself is the science of matter at the very basic level of molecules and atoms.It is the study of what they are made of, how they interact with each other and the role they play in living things Chemists study what substances are made of, how they interact and their role in living things. 

 Why Study Chemistry?

GCSE study in Chemistry provides the foundation for understanding the material world. Scientific understanding is changing our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity. Students should study Chemistry in ways that help them to develop curiosity about the natural world, that give them an insight into how science works and that enable them to appreciate its relevance to their everyday lives. The scope and nature of the study is broad, coherent, practical and satisfying. It encourages students to be inspired, motivated and challenged by the subject and its achievements.

All students  learn essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science.

They gain appreciation of how the complex and diverse phenomena of the natural world can be described in terms of a small number of key ideas that relate to the sciences and that are both inter-linked and of universal application.


 Key Scientific Ideas:

  • the use of conceptual models and theories to make sense of the observed diversity of natural phenomena
  • the assumption that every effect has one or more cause
  • that change is driven by differences between different objects and systems when they interact
  • that many such interactions occur over a distance without direct contact
  • that science progresses through a cycle of hypothesis, practical experimentation, observation, theory
  • development and review
  • that quantitative analysis is a central element both of many theories and of scientific methods of inquiry.

 Working scientifically

The key scientific ideas students learn how to work scientifically by gaining an understanding of:

1 Development of scientific thinking

2 Experimental skills and strategies

3 Analysis and evaluation

4 Scientific vocabulary, quantities, units, symbols and nomenclature

 As well as practical knowledge of the subject, chemical science students develop many other useful skills, such as:

  • problem solving and data analysis - collating and analysing data
  • numeracy- extensive calculations, rearranging formulae, presenting data in tables and graphs
  • communication- writing scientific reports
  • creativity
  • team working and time management- through conducting experiments

It is one of a group of chemical sciences which includes:

  • Biological sciences, such as biochemistry, molecular biology and pharmacology.
  • Materials chemistry, an interdisciplinary field looking at the chemical structure of materials and how they react with their environment.
  • Environmental chemistry, understanding environmental interactions such as climate change, pollution
  • or waste management on a molecular level.

These skills are highly valued by employers and chemical science graduates successfully enter all sorts of careers.

Whether you want to care for penguin colonies in Antartica or work in a dynamic business environment,chemistry can help you achieve your goals. It is responsible for advances in the quality and comfort of our lives and is central to our understanding of the natural world. Exciting products such as new fabrics for sportswear, laptops and state of the art mobile phones are dependent on Chemistry. Many of the challenges facing today’s society will be overcome with the help of chemical scientists.  Their work is central to the development of new sustainable energy resources and new medicines to treat and cure diseases.

Chemistry is an exciting, challenging subject with the potential for significant personal and financial rewards. Chemistry is involved in our everyday lives and there is a vast range of jobs and careers open to those who have studied chemistry at any level; great career opportunities exist both inside and outside the laboratory.

Nobody knows what the jobs of the future will look like but many of them will be created in chemistry to solve global challenges such as human health, energy and the environment.

 Chemists work in almost any field you can think of, including:

  • Pharmaceuticals – developing and testing medicines.
  • Food technology – creating foods and food additives.
  • Manufacturing – developing and producing all types of materials.
  • Petrochemicals – oil, gas and their products.
  • Journalism and publishing – scientific books and journals, the popular press, textbooks and general science books.
  • Forensics – examining evidence after a crime.
  • Teaching or research – in academia or industry.
