Claremont High School Academy

Planned changes to the Curriculum

 Updated May 2018

What are the changes to GCSEs?

Guidance from Ofqual explains that the following key changes to GCSEs are being made:

  • Revised subject content
  • A 9 to 1 grading scale replacing the previous A* to G system
  • Assessment will be mainly by exam at the end of the course
  • Less tiering (where different exams are taken by students of different abilities)

Maths and English were reformed for first teaching from September 2015. First results were issued in summer 2017 and were graded with a number from 9 to 1.

Subjects reformed for first teaching from September 2016 include art and design, French, German, PE, computer science, science, biology, chemistry, physics, history and geography. First results for these subjects will be issued in summer 2018.

What are the changes to AS and A-levels?

Ofqual has set out the following key changes to AS and A-levels:

  • Assessment will be mainly by exam at the end of the course
  • AS-levels are being phased out at Claremont
  • AS and A-levels are decoupled. This means AS results will no longer count towards an A-level.
  • Consequently, many schools, including Claremont, are phasing out using AS levels
  • Saved time in year 12 is now directed towards the A-levels.
  • Revised subject content
  • Subjects were reformed for first teaching from September 2015.
  • First A-level results were issued in summer 2017.

Changes to level 3 Btec subjects

All level 3 Btec courses continue to be mainly internal assessment, however, from September 2016 each course will have selected units assessed through external tasks, performances or written exams.

Alongside A levels, BTECs are the most widely recognised qualification for admission to higher education (HE) - around one in four of all students starting HE courses in England in 2015 had achieved a BTEC National qualification.

At Claremont, these changes are applicable to courses started in September 2016 in Btec Applied Science, Btec Business and Btec ICT.
